The Challenge

When the client had a porch extension built on the front of her house, it was not at all in keeping visually with the rest of the property, which has been constructed using reconstituted cills, pillars and lintels. Instead, these details for the new extension had been cast using plain concrete in the shape of stonework and, once completed, looked so out of place that the occupier called upon Plastic Surgeon to find a solution.

There were two aspects to the project that needed careful consideration from the Fine Finisher before he could start work; the first being that the colour of the concrete was dark grey rather than the warm sandy yellow of original masonry detailing.

Secondly, the original precast components had been coated by a third party, who had not only covered the stone work but also the mortar joints, meaning that everything was sandy yellow. Plastic Surgeon had to decide whether to screed coat the mortar joints on the extension as well the concrete, or leave the joints grey as they should have been.

The Solution

After consultation with the occupier, Plastic Surgeon screed coated all the concrete, including the mortar joints, so that the extension would blend in with the rest of the building. For good adhesion of the coating to the concrete substrate, the Fine Finisher needed to ensure it was clean and free from contaminates. Once prepared, Plastic Surgeon was then able to colour match the screed coat materials exactly before application.

The Result

Once Plastic Surgeon had finished the project, the new colour of the extension ensured it blended properly with the original building, and the occupier commented that she was very pleased with the results achieved.
