Plastic Surgeon is first to launch NVQ in surface repair

It’s been specially tailored to help develop and promote the skills of our staff, while also ensuring strict compliance with the latest requirements for securing a CSCS card.

We’re the first in the industry to offer an NVQ in surface repair, having spent 6 months developing the course to fit industry requirements. Our employees who complete the qualification will earn a Level 2 NVQ in surface repair, something that will enhance their CV for life and ensure their skills are the best in the industry.

By offering the qualification, Plastic Surgeon becomes the only company to offer the correct qualification that reflects the work done on site, and the only repair company to be an accredited NVQ centre.

Recent industry changes mean that to apply for a Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS) card – something required by major contractors in the construction industry – workers must have a relevant qualification. Recognising the need for our Finishers to gain a qualification appropriate to their job role, and as the original founder of the repair industry, we felt it was proper to develop our own NVQ course.

We wanted to create a course that helped to provide expert repair specialists at the end of it, so consequently our CEO, Rob Mouser, took a leading role in its formation. The course covers in depth surface repair skills and knowledge required to rectify complex damage to a range of surfaces, as well as meeting the standards stipulated by the CSCS certification.

Gary Danson, who is Operations Director at Plastic Surgeon, commented: “The NVQ qualification is something we’d been considering for a while. All of our finishers are trained to a very high standard, but while their capabilities are evidenced in their resultant work, our finishers don’t have official recognition in terms of qualifications. With the implementation of the NVQ, they’ll have the appropriate qualification to go alongside and to underscore their considerable skillset.”

Our finishers undergo rigorous training when they join the company and the NVQ will serve to enhance this, reinforcing their understanding of industry requirements and ensuring they achieve the requisite standard of knowledge.

To offer an NVQ, we had to go through extensive requirements and preconditions to gain official accreditation, which required considerable effort to attain. Once this was achieved, we then needed to provide the relevant course content as well as establishing assessors. Some of our internal staff are in the process of qualifying as competent assessors, which, once done, will mean we can complete the course entirely in house – another first for the industry.

With the course requirements accomplished and now in place, 80 of our current finishers have been enrolled, with a further 100 set to join them over the coming months. New recruits will also benefit from the NVQ and will attain it as part of their initial job training.

Now that this has been achieved, we’re in an excellent position as an employer that not only provides a high standard of training but also a nationally recognised qualification.”
