Hand painted repair to wooden surface damage

This week we sat down with James Botting to learn more about the life of an experienced Fine Finisher at Plastic Surgeon.

Q: What’s your role at Plastic Surgeon?

A: I’m a Fine Finisher at Plastic Surgeon and I work within our London region. On a day to day basis I travel to jobs across the region to complete repairs for a whole range of clients from main contractors to homeowners and insurers.

Q: How long have you worked at Plastic Surgeon?

A: I’ve worked at Plastic Surgeon for four years, initially starting as a trainee back in 2014.

Q: What’s your background?

A: I was a painter and decorator for four years before joining Plastic Surgeon.

Q: What does a typical day look like?

A: That’s what I love about the role, it’s so varied every day is completely different, from repairing a crack in a sink to an antique stone fireplace.

Q: What are your biggest challenges?

A: High gloss repairs are the trickiest, a great deal of work goes into it, and there isn’t a lot of margin for error, there are lots of things to think about including understanding how it will dry to get the perfect match – it really can’t be rushed.

Q: What gets you out of bed in the morning?

A: Usually my nine month old daughter!!  But, I do look forward to very badly damaged repairs, they really enable you to put your skills into practice and to demonstrate your expertise.

Q: What did you want to be when you were at school?

A: I always wanted to be a site manager on a construction site, growing up my uncle had the same job and I always thought it sounded quite exciting (it helped that he drove a nice car too).

Q: What do you enjoy most about your role?

A: The trickiest the job the better! Recently I worked on a solid mahogany wood kitchen which had been damaged in a house fire.  The policy holder didn’t want the kitchen to be replaced.  The detail of the wood damage was so intricate, I really had to think outside the box to get the colour match perfect.  The end result was fantastic and the customer was so very grateful to get her kitchen back as it was, anything really is possible with the skills and equipment we have.

Q: If you could change one thing about your job what would it be?

A: It sounds cliché but there really isn’t anything I would change about the actual job, I would however like less traffic!!
