Although an expert in its field, the company realised it needed another set of skills when it came to restoring a marble pillar within the famous restaurant frequented by Sir Winston Churchill on London’s Piccadilly Circus. The client therefore called Plastic Surgeon to find the most appropriate solution for the repair.
Plastic Surgeon found a hole measuring 12 by 8 inches (300 x 200mm), possibly caused by frequent knocks quite some time ago. There were two pieces of the stone that had fallen out while one section missing altogether. The Finisher’s problem was therefore twofold: firstly, he needed to recreate the aged patina and condition of the marble – this being crucial due to the size and visibility of the damage. Secondly, the work needed to be fitted around the opening times of the restaurant, so careful consideration as to how long the repair would take to complete was important.
The Finisher carefully removed and reset the remaining pieces of marble; bonding them using Plastic Surgeon’s proprietary fillers. For areas where the marble was missing or cracked, Plastic Surgeon built up layers of filler to the level of the original stone and then carefully sanded the surface ready for decoration.
Once this preparation was complete, the Finisher coloured the repaired surfaces with an airbrush, mixing a variety of colours and shades to match the original marble. The veins found naturally in the stone where drawn in by hand and, to complete the replication of the aged look of the original marble, a tint was added to the lacquer.
