Minister Heralds Improvements In The Housing Market
As Plastic Surgeon had been predicting – based on level of demand for our finishers’ work – the housebuilding industry in England was last week revealed to have made a strong recovery in the first quarter of 2011; and Housing Minister Grant Shapps welcomed the news with the pledge of further support for the recovery.
While we have been steadily growing the business with repair contracts for housing associations and two of the top five insurance companies, as a repair specialist offering national coverage Plastic Surgeon carries out snagging work for most of the large developers. So with our 100 operatives now matching the figures we achieved, with 20 per cent more vans on the road at the height of the boom, we were confident official statistics would show the number of completions were up on last year.
In fact English private sector completions reached 22,050 in the quarter, up from 20,430 last year; and 23% higher than the previous quarter, while completions were up 12% year on year.
Grant Shapps commented: “Today’s figures are welcome, but they are only the start of the story. I am determined that there should be no slowing down on the road to recovery. The construction industry that builds the homes this country needs can expect more help. We will work closely with housebuilders and listen to their suggestions about how we can improve.”
The Coalition Government is of course actively trying to make the planning process less time-consuming as well as more local, while also negotiating with the banks to improve mortgage availability and encourage lending to first time purchasers. Along with the measures being taken by the developers themselves, including shared equity and mortgage guarantee schemes, almost all the indicators for housing are positive.
This is why we are continuing to recruit new finishers and give them the training necessary to enable them to carry out repairs to all types of construction elements including masonry, cladding, window frames, doors, glass, joinery items, kitchen work-surfaces and flooring. In fact, there is almost nothing used by UK housebuilders which our finishers cannot repair, while we are also always developing new techniques.
