Scanning through the headlines, your blogger discovered a new ruse being used by cowboy builders to con unsuspecting homeowners out of their hard-earned cash.
This scam involves a ‘builder’ who fleeced an elderly couple, living in Plymstock, Devon, out of £4,000 when undertaking to pave their driveway. Not only did he leave the work unfinished, but he also incorporated a distinctive pattern of square, variously coloured bricks at the centre. This, in fact, was a coded message to let other rogue traders know the homeowners were an easy target.
Since 2009, when the couple last saw the original fly-by-night builder, a series of rogue traders have called at their home, all offering to do different work they did not require. The ‘knockers’ included four separate builders offering to relay the drive the original trader left unfinished, with some asking for thousands of pounds more.
The most recent incident in November saw a man tell the victims they were entitled to £14,000 compensation for the poor work – but needed £6,000 in order to release it.
Police have been unable to track down the original criminal and there are also fears that the coded pattern – perhaps scratched or chalked on fences – could have been left outside other properties. They are appealing for information.
By contrast, as a nationwide company, here at Plastic Surgeon we are keen to protect our good reputation regarding being trustworthy and transparent. As a result, we directly employ all our Finishers who are allocated jobs through our national call centre and who follow our code of conduct. This ensures every customer:
- receives a booking confirmation, stating booking details, contact details and Finisher photo
- sees a courteous Finisher in uniform, with full ID
- gets a confirmed appointment date
- receives an email / text confirming AM or PM the evening before
- is notified of any delay in advance
Furthermore, not only is the work, carried out by our 115 plus Finishers based around the country, covered by our warranty, but they also guarantee to clear up any mess or debris before leaving the site. In fact our teams are well used to working in occupied properties, including social housing, council and business premises.
Additionally, all our vans are liveried with our distinctive blue logo; and we include the vehicle registration details when booking the appointment time and date, so you know exactly who’s coming down your drive.
While we are easily identifiable, customers can protect themselves from rogue traders by going to the Government’s TrustMark Tradesmen website at www.trustmark.org.uk
