Strategic Facilities Management on world stage

Strategic Facilities Management on world stage

Strategic Facilities Management on world stage

As a Facilities Management repair specialist, at Plastic Surgeon we have been getting involved in a wide range of markets and sectors including public funded bodies such as social housing, the MoD, hospitals and student accommodation; frequently collaborating these days with their facilities management or FM teams who manage the budgets in order to get the most value for money. In the case of banks, commercial offices and even our cruise liner work, FM organisations are often the first line of contact.

But FM is often quite a grey area, especially when one starts to consider that it is not now unusual to look abroad when seeking to make those pennies stretch further…. Indeed, bureaucracy will often raise its ugly head and act to arrest any strategic direction facilities managers wish to adopt – thus the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors’ new Global Strategic Facilities Management Guidance Note has been launched.

The aim of the publication being to help FMs drive professionalism internationally, as well as assist the sector in achieving wider corporate objectives.

Offering best guidance to FMs and corporate real estate professionals on developing, implementing and then evaluating a strategic property management plan, the document includes sections on understanding corporate vision, as well as adaptation of strategies to wider business objectives.  In all, helping nurture key skills that will enable FMs to contribute positively and with authority, and therefore gain more credibility and respect in their specialist field.

Other aspects covered in the guidance provide in-depth advise on operations and maintenance management; including the all important management of office workspaces and people; which will, of course, lead to improved and efficient organizational capability.

Johnny Dunford, Global Commercial Property Director at RICS said: “Business has tended to categorize FM by its day-to-day service functions and not given it the position it deserves at the decision making table. This is beginning to change in the UK and, armed with RICS’ best practice guidance, FM leaders will have the tools at their disposal to continue the ongoing professionalization of the sector and demonstrate the benefits a strategic approach can bring on a global level.”

If this guidance helps the FM sector drive forward change, improved capabilities and strategic planning with the management of the world’s estates, then it has to be good for companies such us Plastic Surgeon; because it will help us too in delivering a better planned strategy for maintenance and repair to some of our very best clients.
