Planning changes will assist SME homebuilders

The government’s changes to the existing planning system in September announced that reforms to speed up and modernise the current planning system will get the country building again.

These changes will come as a major boost, not only to housebuilders, but also SME’s in particular, who are currently cut off by the planning process. They are seen as the key players in getting the country building on the scale needed to drive our economic recovery.

The current system has shown itself to be unfavourable to small businesses, with the proportion of new homebuilding from SME’s dropping drastically, with 40% growth in new homes 30 years ago, to only 12% today.

There’s a commitment from the government to build 300,000 new homes a year, and with the economic pressures caused by the COVID crisis, there is even more of an appetite to support housebuilders.

The Housing Secretary, Robert Jenrick, commented:

Our complex planning system has been a barrier to building the homes people need; it takes seven years to agree local housing plans and five years just to get a spade in the ground,”

Also key to the new plans will be a commitment to deliver high quality and environmentally friendly new homes to meet climate change targets.

Matthew Fell, CBI Chief UK Policy Director said:

“Delivering high quality, safe and environmentally-friendly new homes is critical for meeting our climate targets while accelerating regional growth.”

Plastic Surgeon House build division works with housebuilders across the country from large PLC’s to SME’s.

Richard Moreton, National Account Manager at Plastic Surgeon commented:

“We certainly welcome these changes; it will ensure that our clients can build more homes to meet the government’s ambitious housing targets.

It is also reassuring that the government and the sector is dedicated to developing sustainability policies. Sustainability is what we at Plastic Surgeon are all about.  We are highly committed to working with housebuilders, and assisting them in developing methods and techniques to further improve their sustainability credentials.

Our range of services ensure that housebuilders repair rather than replace. This is not only better for the environment as it reduces the number of items that go to landfill, but it also speeds up the build process, enabling housebuilders to complete plots quickly and effectively.”
