The government’s changes to the existing planning system in September announced that reforms to speed up and modernise the current planning system will get the country building again.
These changes will come as a major boost to all housebuilders but in particular to SME’s currently cut off by the planning process. They are seen as the key players in getting the country building on the scale needed to drive our economic recovery.
The current system has shown itself to be unfavourable to small businesses, with the proportion of new homebuilding from SME’s dropping drastically from 40% 30 years ago to just 12% today.
There is a commitment from the government to build 300,000 new homes a year and with the economic pressures caused by the COVID crisis, there is even more of an appetite to support housebuilders.
The Housing Secretary, Robert Jenrick, commented:
“Our complex planning system has been a barrier to building the homes people need; it takes seven years to agree local housing plans and five years just to get a spade in the ground,”
Also key to the new plans will be a commitment to deliver high quality and environmentally friendly new homes to meet climate change targets.
Matthew Fell, CBI Chief UK Policy Director said:
