Cruise ship repair and maintenance service

Cruise ship repairs

The national cosmetic repair specialist, Plastic Surgeon has agreements to carry out maintenance work for major cruise lines, while the ships are actually sailing to destinations such as the Mediterranean and the West Indies.

Teams of the Plastic Surgeon’s highly trained Finishers work on board ships to carry out work including wood grain repairs, making good cracks and chips in sanitaryware, and even restoring sections of marble.

The Managing Director of Plastic Surgeon, Rob Mouser, comments: “The company has been growing steadily over recent years despite the recession – mainly by diversifying into new sectors as housebuilding went through the doldrums – and these are important new contracts for us. The cruise business naturally puts the treatment of its passengers top of its priorities.

“These liners are in dock only for a day or less, for changeover and taking on supplies, so we have entered agreements to have riding crews of Finishers sail with the ships to carry out cosmetic repairs to the cabins and public areas. The ship’s management arrange with the passengers a time window when work can be carried out and our Finishers are accompanied by a steward, who is present to ensure everything is left perfectly clean and tidy, as if we had never been there.

“We initially carried out demonstrations of our techniques on two of the liners when they docked in Southampton at the weekends: repairing a cracked floor tile in one of the restaurants and a piece of marble in a bathroom. The facilities management company were confident in our capabilities and so we won the work; and everything has gone smoothly.

“The Finishers set off with the equivalent of the stock from two of our vans and therefore have all the materials and equipment required to carry out any repair they come up against: it having been agreed that they will inspect the cabins for any blemishes beyond the job they have been tasked to do. So they might be asked to repair a chipped sink or shower tray and then also carry out a wood grain repair to a piece of furniture. It is a new challenge for us, logistically, but one we are equal to.”

At the same time as providing clients with a comprehensive cosmetic repair service addressing virtually every type of product and substrate, Plastic Surgeon is also addressing important aspects of the sustainability agenda. For while the company’s ethos of ‘repairing rather than replacing’ represents a saving of approximately £3 for every pound spent, this approach also significantly reduces waste going to landfill and therefore helps cut a customer’s carbon footprint.

Uniquely, Plastic Surgeon has developed its VisibilITy software which translates each Finisher’s job report, sent from their hand held computer, into the equivalent weight and other statistics on a data base that participating customers can utilise for their own sustainability reporting.
