‘Excellent’ metal cladding repair for Mansell

Repairs to metal cladding

At times having to contend with high winds and driving rain, two of Plastic Surgeon’s most experienced Finishers have completed a challenging cosmetic repair contract involving work both inside and external to HMS Excellent.

Luckily for the plucky pair, however, Excellent is one of the Royal Navy’s shore bases, located around Port Solent in Hampshire, and offers recruits Sea Survival Training.

The two Finishers were called to the site when Mansell Construction – a regular client of Plastic Surgeon – was coming close to handover on the construction of a replacement for the original buildings on the site. As is normal on almost all construction projects, certain areas such as the striking exterior cladding in metallic silver, had suffered a number of small scratches and dents; and the main contractor opted to employ Plastic Surgeon as offering the most cost effective form of intervention for the ‘snagging’ process.

While the first stage of the six days work required were carried out just prior to the Christmas holiday, the two Finishers were also on site when 70 mile-per-hour gales were blowing up the Solent in the first week of January. Despite the inclement conditions the Finishers were able to carry on preparing the high-tech aluminium cladding panels ready for re-spraying: filling any dents and scratches, then smoothing them back to the original profile ready to be painted when there was a few hours gap in the rain.

Inside the new Sea Survival Training Centre, they carried out a number of repairs, including filling and colour matching a series of screw-holes in interior doors where signage had been fitted and later removed as plans changed. Finally a number of black laminate worksurfaces that had suffered minor scratches were also repaired rather than having to be replaced.

Andy Keenagh, Plastic Surgeon’s R&D Manager recounts: “I had been drafted in to help out with high demand in Plastic Surgeon’s Southern Region. We carried out a variety of cosmetic repairs for Mansell Construction, both inside and outside the building, where minor damage had been caused by access scaffold or site vehicles. They are routine tasks for us, but the work we did to the silver cladding panels and a roller shutter door just ensured everything was in pristine condition for the final handover to the client.”
