Dr Samuel Johnson, the 18th century English lexicographer, famously remarked that “when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.” It seems this is as true today as when the literary critic was compiling his Dictionary of the English Language, for the desire of everyone from Russian oligarchs to French tax exiles to live in our capital city is keeping demand for property sky high.
From Europe’s new tallest structure – The Shard, with its multi-million pound penthouses – to the conversion of former basement car parks into bijou bedsits, the London housing market remains as buoyant as ever, with many of the UK housebuilders having based the rebalancing of their businesses on work within the M25.
In fact things have become so busy for Plastic Surgeon’s South-east surface repair division that we have now set up a new London team to keep pace with demand. Some of our most experienced Finishers are being reinforced with a handful of new recruits to give the team a total strength of 12, plus a new Operations Manager to focus on the needs of the capital.
Of course London is far more than a great place to live – its attractions are based on the fact that it is a huge centre for commerce, with business activity extending from the Square Mile and Canary Wharf to the furthest boroughs in Essex or Kent. Then there are the shops, hotels, restaurants, clubs and other leisure destinations as well as all the sports venues, historic buildings and purpose built tourist attractions such as Madame Tussaud’s or the Millennium Wheel.
While the recent opening of The Shard may have been a ‘high point’ for property development, the skyline of London continues to change every year as sites are redeveloped or existing buildings have extra floors added to maximize land use. And as well as the logistics of completing what are often complex construction projects in congested locations, every one of the millions of homes, businesses and other premises across Greater London require on-going maintenance.
Plastic Surgeon has already established a good reputation with client groups extending from main contractors to home insurance providers, and from facilities managers to hospital estates managers. Now we are confident that setting up the new team dedicated to growing the “repair rather than replace” message amongst those who live and work in one of the worlds most vibrant cities can only be good for all concerned.
