A new £33million national centre of excellence for the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service has been under construction at the Heriot-Watt Research Park near Edinburgh since 2014.

The centre has been built from scratch at the site and designed to serve the specific needs of the SNBTS. It comprises facilities for processing and testingbuilding repairs blood, tissues and cells, as well as R&D, quality and regulatory functions and offices.

The main contractors tasked with the project were Interserve, an international support services and construction group, and Kajima, another major group. They were both given a 50/50 partnership in the venture.

With the project nearing completion within its anticipated time frame of the first quarter of 2017, Interserve has been making sure it’s ready for handover to the SNBTS. Thanks to inevitable damage during the construction process however, numerous repairs were required throughout the site.

Having worked with Plastic Surgeon in the past, Interserve called upon its specialist surface repair services to make good a variety of onsite damage.snagging building repairs

The majority of the work was required on the 3rd floor of the centre, focusing on the research labs. The resulting tasks saw a mix of repairs carried out on IPS panels, Trespa panels on worktops, skirting along windows as well as extensive repairs to powder coated aluminium doorframes suffering from numerous scratches and dents.

The scale and variety of the task at hand meant that, for the first two weeks of the job, it required 5 of Plastic Surgeon’s Fine Finishers to do 12 hour days, for 6 days a week. From there, for the final two weeks, the team was then reduced to a team of 3 Finishers who again worked 12 hour days, for 6 days a week.

Taking a month in total, the bulk of the work was completed. However, the Plastic Surgeon team is still on hand for any last minute repairs required leading up to the handover.

The project is yet another example of the range of specialist skills that Plastic Surgeon is able to utilise in a diverse environment. Interserve, havingrepair buildings experienced them in the past, was well aware of Plastic Surgeon’s capabilities and had no hesitation in calling upon them.
